Behind the Walls

Bringing the message of recovery to those who cannot attend regular NA meetings.

Behind the Walls meetings are Narcotics Anonymous meetings held inside correctional facilities, treatment centers, and hospitals. These meetings are brought in by NA members to share experience, strength, and hope with addicts who are unable to attend outside meetings.

What to Expect

Behind the Walls meetings are structured NA meetings held in hospitals, treatment centers, and correctional facilities. The purpose is simple: to carry a clear message of recovery to addicts who cannot attend regular NA meetings.

Meetings typically include:

  • A brief introduction explaining what Narcotics Anonymous is
  • Readings from NA literature
  • Personal sharing by members in recovery
  • Time for questions when appropriate

These meetings follow the same principles as any NA meeting. The message is one of identification, hope, and recovery.

We do not give legal advice, provide counseling, or speak on behalf of the facility. Our role is to share our experience with recovery in Narcotics Anonymous.

Atmosphere

H&I meetings are respectful and structured. Because they take place inside facilities, there are guidelines that all volunteers must follow.

You may notice:

  • Staff presence during meetings
  • Time limitations
  • Rules about what can and cannot be brought inside
  • Restrictions on personal contact information

These guidelines protect both the facility and NA members.

The focus remains on sharing recovery and carrying the message.

For Members Inside

If you are attending an H&I meeting:

  • You are not required to speak
  • You are not required to identify yourself as an addict
  • You are welcome to listen

NA is a program of recovery from addiction. Anyone who has a desire to stop using is welcome.

For NA Volunteers

If you are interested in volunteering:

  • You must have a minimum clean time requirement (set by the regional H&I committee)
  • You must attend orientation or training
  • You must follow facility guidelines strictly
  • You must avoid sponsorship or personal contact inside the facility

Access to institutions is earned through trust. We honor that trust through responsible service.

Why It Matters

Many addicts first hear the message of Narcotics Anonymous inside an institution. Behind the Walls meetings ensure that recovery is available even when someone cannot attend a regular meeting in the community.

The message remains the same:
Recovery is possible.

Many members first heard the NA message while inside a facility.
Recovery is possible — wherever you are.
